Sylar’s ambition consumes him. He wants to be special, he wants to be important, he wants to be better than everyone else, he wants his life to mean something. It’s almost like it turns him into a completely different person. No longer the humble and content watchmaker, Gabriel Gray, but the power-ravenous serial killer: Sylar. However, it must be said that as a person, Sylar is not completely without morals. He doesn’t murder without reason, at least he tries not to. He doesn’t kill un-evolved humans unless they get in the way of his target; He has nothing to gain from doing so. He would never kill someone just because he can. And- he says- and when he’s got enough powers, he’ll be finished. He’ll stop. That and sometimes, Sylar really, truly, scares himself. He reasons that killing others to steal their powers is only the natural course of evolution. Survival of the Fittest. However… Deep, deep down, he knows that he is wrong. That he shouldn’t be taking peoples lives for his personal gain. And even maybe, deep deep down, he wants to be saved. Sometimes after a kill, he is remorseful, sometimes he drives himself mad with guilt. But that never lasts long. When he’s not feeling particularly murderous, Sylar seems to be your everyday twenty-something. In fact, in conversation, he can come off as being quite witty… charming, even. That… or Sylar also happens to be an excellent actor. From a polite southern gentleman to a quirky city music-nerd, Sylar has fooled some of the smartest people on the planet. Not to say that he himself doesn’t care about music, or art, or small furry animals. He even cares for people, sometimes. His mother… for example. Her death was a complete accident on his part, and the only one he ever regretted. There is also one other person he’s grown to trust: Mohinder Suresh, the Anglo-Indian geneticist who traveled to New York to finish his father’s work. Work that Sylar himself cut short with a few quick blows to the head. After traveling together for a couple weeks, though Sylar was posing as his recent victim Zane Taylor, Sylar began to think that if there was one person he could count on, it would be Mohinder. A thought that was proven wrong when Sylar called Mohinder for help. Sylar had just had a prophetic vision (an ability he had just stolen) that led him to believe he would be the cause of an explosion that would wipe out the entirety or New York City. It was a vision that terrified him, and Sylar didn’t understand it. That wasn't something he would do. All of those innocent people... and New York was his home. However, it turned out that Mohinder really didn’t care enough to help him. No one ever had. And so Sylar doesn’t really care about anyone either. |
1. Intuitive Aptitude. This is Sylar’s first ability, and it is so indistinguishable from his natural talents that neither Chandra Suresh nor the lab at the Company can find it in his genetics or brain function. It’s something that Sylar does naturally and unconsciously. It means that he just knows how things work. This goes for biological and mechanical complex systems. For very complex systems, Sylar can understand those with types he’s familiar with within a few seconds. For very complex systems he is not familiar with, he can understand within a few minutes of examination. For mildly complex and mechanical systems, he can understand them instantaneously, with no examination at all. If it is within his means, Sylar can take apart, but also fix any system he is familiar with. Mainly he works with timepieces, such as watches and clocks. 2. Telekinesis. This is the first ability that Sylar stole and the one he’s had the most practice with, so now it’s almost second nature to him. Sylar showed a high degree of competence with Telekinesis just a few hours after having acquired the ability, he was even better at it than the original owner (a trend that will continue with all of his stolen abilities), and has now mastered the ability. 3. Cryokinesis The ability to freeze anything with H20. Getting the H20 isn’t really a problem… there is ambient moisture in the air all of the time. This also includes freezing people from the inside out. Actually Sylar can freeze pretty much anything. *He has to be either touching the thing, or at least three feet from whatever he wants to freeze. However, he can freeze connecting things (like a stretch of road) for a few hundred yards within seconds. 4. Enhanced Memory Sylar can remember everything he sees without studying, and use the memory to learn new skills. For example, he once skimmed the operations manual for an eighteen-wheeler, and then knew how to drive the truck flawlessly. This is a passive ability, like his Intuitive Aptitude. 5. Liquifaction Sylar can turn any solid object into liquid, essentially rearranging the molecules. This… might or might not work on living or biological objects. He hasn’t really tried it. It makes a mess. 6. Enhanced Hearing Sylar can hear everything. At least… that’s how it feels sometimes. He can hear at a range of at least forty miles, possibly more. He won’t hear pins drop at forty miles, but he can hear rain, sirens, that sort of thing. He can hear breathing, heartbeats, every single noise you make. He has even learned to recognize one persons heartbeat from another, like a fingerprint. When he was first learning to control the ability, every sound was amplified. Which HURT. When he doesn’t have complete control, certain frequencies of sounds and exceedingly loud volumes still hurt. This is a passive ability, but one that has to be closely regulated constantly. It was the hardest ability for him to get used to, but an invaluable one. 7. Precognition Sylar can tell the future sometimes, if he really works at it. This ability is just kind of… not as useful as he thought it would be. In fact, most of the time the future scares him. And now he knows that what he sees is not necessarily exactly what will happen. It kind of depends. 8. Induced Radioactivity Yes. You read that right. Sylar can blow up whatever he wants. He can emit radiation. He can emit light and heat. He can light things on fire this way, even though it’s not really the same as pyrokinesis. He hasn’t found a pyrokinetic yet, but there’s one in Texas. Don’t tell him that. Sylar has at least three more abilities that he haven’t been directly exhibited in the show yet, so I can’t really tell you about them… Season 2 starts in a week so I’ll try to hold of on filling in any new ones for him until we can see in canon what they actually are. We DO know that Sylar uses his telekinesis to do a lot of things we wouldn’t normally think telekinesis can do. Because of his extensive telekinetic manipulation, Sylar seems a lot less vulnerable to injury than the normal person. For example, he can usually stop bullets before they hit him and things like that. Sylar has also used his Intuitive Aptitude combined with his Enhanced Memory to memorize several different medical journals and textbooks, as well as Suresh's "Activating Evolution" which probably also has something to with how he seems to be impervious to injury and heal faster than expected. Sylar also has a way of traveling quickly (one second he’s there, turn around and he’s vanished kind of quick) and noiselessly (the victim he stole the Enhanced hearing from said that she didn’t hear his footsteps when he came in, and Sylar replied “because there weren’t any"). Whether this is an extension of one of the powers we have already seen (It’s possibly Sylar has figured a way to manipulate the telekinesis into a kind of levitation), or a different power altogether, has yet to be decided conclusively. He also fell three stories and walked away from it… a fall that killed Peter Petrelli. Maybe it’s because Peter somewhat broke his fall, maybe he used his telekinesis to slow or cushion his own fall, though it looked as though his fall was identical. Time may tell. |
